The Environment:
There are two roads by which you can arrive to the town of Buggerru and both of them are extremely panoramic. This area appears abruptly in front of visitors who find themselves secluded from the town by a series of high canyons that majestically descend to the sea where one can see a beautiful naturally formed colonnade of rock pillars and a long beach that is dotted with residential houses. The mountains tell you the story of this region by themselves; the area is abundant in abandoned old mines, large caverns and deep grottos with all of them definitely worth visiting. Sardinian history has long been connected to the region of Buggerru and many years ago there were a great number of coal mines in operation here that employed a major part of the local population. The mines have been inoperative for some time and the local authorities are attempting to set up museums displaying the regions industrial glory days to tourists and visitors, with excursions down into deep old disused mines tunnels where mining areas and old disused cart rails from which the coal was excavated. The most famous of these mines is known as the Henry Mineshaft. A visit to this area is highly recommended so one can associate oneself and imagine with the once thriving coal mining industry that was to be found here. Towards the south the coastline ends at the beautiful bay of Cala Domesitca. From the other side you can see the enormous beach of San Nicola which extends right up to the village of Portixeddu, which in turn, is surrounded by great sand dunes and forests of juniper bushes. In winter the pace of life becomes quiet and is dependent on sea conditions. Locals primarily talk about fishing, tourism and old mining stories which once made Buggerru famous and even gave it the nickname by which it was known - Little Paris.
The Spanish Tower is located high over the peak of the "Holy Waters" and ideally separates the two communities of Iglesias and Buggerru. The Spanish Tower was constructed in 1600 as a defensive fortification by King Phillip II of Spain to ward off barbarian attacks that were frequent in the area. The Spanish Tower has a cylindrical shape and is encircled by walls that are 2.5 meters thick. If you ascend to the top of the tower you end up on a high terrace where there are placed a great number of cannons that were used in the sites defence.
